This thread is an experiment. Read the rules carefully.I'm making this thread as a test, to see if this works. RULES:The idea is that I'm going to make a 'side-topic' thread, keep it open for a few weeks or so, then lock it and make a new one. The forum rules posted by Derek HERE still apply, with the exeption that the current topic of the thread is not considered off-topic. Any discussion grossly outside the topic will be removed, and warnings will be issued. I will personally be watching this thread very closely. Most of us are adults, and paid good money to get in on the ground floor, so I hope we can handle this. With the legalese out of the way, here is the topic of this edition of The Tavern Table: Fantasy MoviesWhat movies have you seen recently? Were they any good, would you recommend them to others?what is your current favourite fantasy film?Any films you think are so bad that they warp around to so-bad-it's-good-territory?Ready? Set, go!

I'll give it a shot. I just saw "The Congress". It stars Robin Wright as herself. She's an aging actress who's days as "The Princess Bride" are long behind her. She's convinced by her agent to sign away the digital rights to her likeness to a movie studio by her agent. She must also never act again. This is from the director of Waltz with Bashir and is one of the oddest movies I've seen in a long time. There's rivers of subtext to dive through. The film has an unexpected twist that plants it firmly in the realm of fantasy. It wasn't a home run for me like "Cloud Atlas", but the themes of creativity and social engineering made it an interesting if somewhat exhausting watch.

I knew this thread was a good idea. I've never heard of The Congress, and by watching the trailer I felt like I'd ejoy watching it. I have to see if I can find it at my local rental, thanks!
I'll get back to this after I remember what my latest fantasy film was, been a while since I've watched any movies.

I saw Populaire recently. A quaint French romance about secretaries and typing competitions before the invention if the electric typewriter. Definitely recommend.
Current favourite fantasy film hmm. Hard to choose. I'll need to get back to that.
Movie so bad it's good? Iron Skies.

The best movie I've seen recently was Maleficent. Really good re-telling of the Sleeping Beauty story, and Sharlto Copley really brought it as the king. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite actors, and the movie is definitely worth waiting for the DVD if it hasn't stopped running in theaters.
My current favorite fantasy film is the Lord of the Rings franchise. Visually stunning, great acting, and they did well with their retelling of the books. Tolkien is very detailed and can get dry at times, and Peter Jackson's done a great job of keeping it fun, interesting, but still staying true to the detailed world of Middle-Earth.
My favorite "so bad it's good" film is Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Every Christmas some friends and I get together, drink plenty of spiced cider and eggnog, and make fun of it. If you haven't seen it, it's a holiday classic.

The best movie I've seen recently is Library Wars (based on Japanese Manga), a quasi-government organization (Media Betterment Committee) has started banning/destroying "bad" books, movies & music & it's up the the Library defense force to protect the rights of citizens to read what they want. Best fantasy movie is Hogswatch, though I do also enjoy Going Postal as well and the movie you hate loving, or love to hate ...Flash Gordon

Did you guys see that horrible Scifi channel (I refuse to use y's) Flash Gordon show from like around 2007 or 2008? What little I remember it was like a crappy Sliders ripoff. What movies have you seen recently? Were they any good, would you recommend them to others? I saw Guardians of the Galaxy and it was really good. I'd recommend it to pretty much everyone, but especially to anyone who pines for the days when Scifi wasn't grimdark depressing.
what is your current favourite fantasy film? Haven't really seen any lately and drawing a blank on the genre, it's kind of been under represented in film, I suppose Star Wars may count but I wasn't really too thrilled about LoTR. I just wish someone would do Dragonlance some justice, the animated movie from a few years ago was the most disappointing film ever for me : (
Any films you think are so bad that they warp around to so-bad-it's-good-territory? I want to say Ice Pirates, but I think that may be cheating as I think they were kinda of trying to cash in on that (they did a good job if they were). Plan 9 From Outer Space would be my other choice.

Double feature bad movies - Battle beyond the Stars & finally out on DVD - Space Raiders. What makes these movies so bad their "good?" Re-using the same music & space ships / battle scenes!
Same music - check
Heroes using same ship? - check Villain using same ship? - check villains' minions using same ships? - check
Now I'll have to double check to see if the pew-pew-pews are the same colors for each ship.
