Hey all, I thought it would be fun to start a thread to throw out ideas for all of the different settings you'd like to see for Simple System, perhaps to inspire future Simple Smiths who are are looking for something interesting to develop. Here's a few to get the ball rolling, not necessarily original but they would make fun settings to play in: - A virtual world, players are trapped inside with no memory of their outside lives
- A post-apocalyptic world where humans are gone and radiation has mutated animal species into sentient competing factions
- Near future world bombarded by wreckage from an alien ship and governments, corporations and criminal organizations fight over its advanced technology used to create super humans and weapons
Now let's hear some of your ideas!

Refugees landing on a set of uninhabited islands in a lagoon, finding no familiar food. (Basically a survivor setting)

A Space Pirate crew with letter of marque, must navigate both interstellar political intrigue and external threats
Refuges searching the stars for a new home, while being harried by bandits & outlaws
& the best idea ever: Ponies in Space!!!

So, would people have interest in a Steampunk setting for Simple System?

So, would people have interest in a Steampunk setting for Simple System? I ALWAYS have an interest in Steampunk! I've been fiddling around with a floating island "universe" that has fantasy and steampunk elements combined. The basic premise is these islands float in an invisible aether (as opposed to islands on water) around a central sun like point. One must fly from island to island, usually using "Skyships", a cross between dirigibles and magically enhanced winged steamships. Just an idea... and being geeky it obsesses me!

Oh that sounds cool, hopefully we'll hear more about it someday?
I've always liked steampunk, and considered making something for SS, but my current setting will take my time for quite a while.

Long hours at work and a wonderful wife and daughter take up most of my time, so I don't have a gaming group to bounce ideas off of. I do this mostly because I love the creative thinking involved. Work isn't exactly engaging, so I need something to get the little gray cells working! Always interested in feedback! If I get some time, maybe I'll attach an edited version of what I have...

That sounds really fun, it conjures some really striking images. I can imagine some factions/islands relying more on technology while others moreso on the traditional fantasy elements.
It would be really great to see individuals team up to work on settings, especially if some have time constraints that would prevent them from coming out with something on their own.

The steampunk setting I am working on has fantasy elements, because it was originally a world design for OGL Steampunk, and I like the idea of a fantasy world in the midst of a chaotic transition to steampunk. I have a lot already written out, but if anyone has ideas (that they think i should incorporate) throw it out there. Also, no Steampunk setting is ever complete without skyships and floating islands.

fotostuf, that sounds really awesome! How much material do you have, already?

fotostuf, that sounds really awesome! How much material do you have, already? Answering that question would take more space than this forum has! Most recently I created the Skylands, a setting in need of a simple rule system (hence my love of Simple System) mostly because I have never been a fan of never-ending reference books, tables, rules, and anything that got in the way of storyline.
I have a basic introduction (with a broad timeline of different ages of the Skylands, its composition, major events, maps of the overall island groups and their relative positions); some common creatures (aether squids, giant flying animals, sail fish, etc); the population and their societies (Aeolian - winged humanoids, Dweorgar - steampunk dwarves, Humans - smallest population of the sapient inhabitants, Myraan - a feline lynx race who are the primary merchants, Sidhe - the largest population and primary rulers, roughly equivalent to elves, Urkindi - the polar opposites of Sidhe, not unlike an orc type race, but more playable with a group of adventurers, and Vodyr, the race that controls the aether ways and primary travel between island groups); information on seasons, holidays, religion, travel; a section on the main government (the Great House, an overall body representing the main races); a list of measurements and coinage; and some general story lines (mysterious ancient stone circles, the stormwatch - the destructive region below the Skylands, etc).
[sorry you asked yet?!?]
Funny enough, I did a Kickstarter on Bruce Heard's Calidar, which just came in. He created a universe with planets that people sail to and from on Skyships... so I'm changing my Skyships to Aethercraft. Makes a kind o sense anyway since the Skylands are surrounded by aether. It has a section for those that use Pathfinder, but I bought it for his interesting ideas on skyships and planetary movements.
Of course I don't have anyone to game with anymore, so all of this is just an escape from a rather boring work life so as to avoid turning into a mound of quivering gelatinous cube in my old age! That and family take up a lot of time (family time = GREAT , work time = NOT SO MUCH !), so there are always more ideas than time to put them all down.
[gotta be sorry you asked by now!!]
So there you go... and it all fit in one post! What are you working on? What is everyone working on? It's always great to hear other peoples story ideas!

Not sorry, at all! That sounds pretty sweet. So back in the day I got hold of a long-term borrow of the core book for OGL Steampunk. It was a decent system, based on d20, but with a few weird (i.e. poorly developed) ideas for magic and a semi-complicated class system.
Anyway, I did a one-off, wanting to become more familiar with Steampunk in general. In developing a "brief world overview" I ended up with like 20 pages of info on the various empires, races, history, etc, etc. The OGL Steampunk world had a blend of old fantasy (elves, dwarves, gnomes), new steampunky stuff (Cogs-a sentient robot race, hybrids-werepeople). Plus it had revenant races (Ghosts, vampires). It was a really eclectic system.
Sadly, I lost most of the write-up in a move, or a computer change, or something like that. I've started rewriting as much as I can remember.
I liked the blend of fantasy and steampunk, and my world presumes that some of the old races are resistant to the advent of steam tech, and some are not. Plus it introduces a few new, non-fantasy races. A mechanical race, mutants, and Scavengers, a bird-wolf-human race.
I've also started writing up item, power (for mutants), spell, skill, and race/class cards. I'm eager to see the editable GIMP files, although I'm nervous I may not have the technical know-how to use them. I'm trying to include as much awesome Steampunkery as possible. Skyships, submersibles, one-wheeled vehicles, and shittons of goggles.
Either way, I'm pretty excited to get this world back up and running.

My super tired brain started piecing together a "metagame", where the players are gamers, trying to play their weekly RPG of choice.
It would have two levels, one of a very simple tabletop RPG with a goal of finding the MacGuffin of the week. One of the players would be the GM of the group, trying to foil the other players with a bunch of skills like Trap and Random Encounter.
The actual 'encounters' of the game would be the distractions to their game; Figuring out who pays the pizza, calming down the angry SO, walking the dog, scheduling next weeks game, etc.
I'm going to stop here before I start to actually develop it. Besides, there is likely something like it already out there. I'd end up developing both parts of the game into ridiculous extremes.
I evidently need to sleep now...

And the boss fight/hardest challenge of all, getting the group together for the next session!

We are all in a game right now... the more we create worlds and scenarios, the more they become real... until... we... forget... our... previous... lives. MUST... FLIP... CARD! AAARGH... I'm trapped in a virtual post apocalyptic steampunk world of floating islands bombarded by an alien pirate spaceship... hey... who's paying for the pizza?!?
