You discard any XP that goes over the next level.
With the Perseverance Engine rule, I predict players will have quite a few Hero Points, which unless used for reflips etc. could be "wasted".
What if, the rule would read something like this, instead:
Fill in a number of bubbles on the experience track equal to the experience points earned, stopping when you reach a numbered threshold. Exchange any extra points into Story Points, one for (two/three?) experience points.
Thoughts?

Interesting. The reason I decided to have players discard any excess experience points was to prevent players from hoarding hero points in order to reach max level as quickly as possible. Hero points are meant to be spent, which contributes to the fun of the game and interest in the story (essentially allowing the players to pull off heroic feats when it's most needed). Discarding any leftover experience points means that even those inclined to save their hero points will have no reason to beyond a certain amount, and therefore more likely to spend the "extras" freely.

I was talking to a friend about how experience works in Simple System, and we both agreed that adding unused Hero Points to XP kind of rewards players who get lucky flips (and therefore don't have to spend Hero Points), or conversely, players who are more outgoing and like to roleplay every scene. In the case of the lucky flipper, their situation kind of snowballs, since if they level up and improve their ability scores before their fellow players do, they have even less of a need to use Hero Points to perform well in encounters. In the case of boisterous roleplayers, if their improv skills already give them benefits in encounters (by cleverly roleplaying their way into earning boosts to attempts, and also getting Hero Points to spend), it seems a little unfair to the more introverted players if they ALSO get a bonus to character advancement (by not using their extra earned Hero Points). We have both types of players in my regular group, so I could see how this could lead to some grumbling. I really like the "roleplay well to get Hero Points" system, but I think all characters should level up at the same time.

Why not limit it to one unused hero point and one unused story point?
