Hello all, I know I've been kind of silent here over the past week or so, but I'm doing a lot with Simple System and will be announcing the next batch of updates very soon. For now, I wanted to throw out some ideas I have for community events and get your feedback. I'd like to run some competitions and create some awards for outstanding contributions to Simple System from members of the community, both my picks and the community's picks. Here are some of the categories I had in mind: - Best New Setting (complete with setting primer, setting cards, and 3 part starter adventure)
- Best New Accessory Pack (pack of 20 or more setting cards for use with any Simple System game, be it items, opponents, powers, skills, traits, or a mix)
- Best Adventure (awarded for the most entertaining/exciting adventure, either as part of a New Setting or a stand alone adventure outline)
- Best "Let's Play" Video (best recording of an actual game/play session, whether it be an online play session or played in person)
In the future I would like to post specific guidelines on what each category will be judged on (artwork, originality, presentation, balance, audio/video quality in the case of "let's play" videos, etc.), as well as submission cutoff dates. There would be awards, such as badges you could place on your products and use in your forum signatures, as well as actual trophies(!). I would really like to hear your thoughts as well as any ideas you have for additional categories. Thanks for your feedback and looking forward to what you come up with!

I just thought of another category: - Best Review (for a review of a product made for Simple System either in written or video form)

That sounds really cool! Especially being able to badge your materials, so you can have "winner of the 2016 Best New Setting" right on the cards or box or somewhere else, and drum up some buzz.
Since the rules are designed to leave room for added game designs (such as the Raz game from Starward Horizons), what about a "Best New Mechanic," or, "Best Engine" category?

It's a nice way to encourage content, but I'd be somewhat wary of these things becoming popularity contests, or of Simple Smiths getting aggrieved when their products fail to win anything ("But how could they have rejected my setting for Adolescent Zombie Ninja Animals?! The FOOLS!").
Not saying I don't like the idea, just adding caveats to it.

I agree, the idea is good, but the execution needs to be careful.
In any case, I'll be looking forward to seeing what people come up with. Simultaneously I'm disqualifying myself, based on my position and the rather big percentage of backing of the project I've given.
